'THE HOST' Discussion Thread

Despite its genre, The Host is a very human story. There aren’t any gadgets, ray guns, time warps, black holes, spaceships or any of the other sci-fi standards. It all takes place on the planet earth in the present day and is, at its core, a love story.

Oh God, Kyle from Roswell. The "dumb jock" who turned into something more...making me nostalgic.

Anywho, yes I do see that a little bit.

Jared was tricky for me. I felt like Wanda should have wanted to interact as much as possible with him because she was in "love" with him, but I guess it was kind of a borowed love. Her real love was for Ian. I am in the middle of re-reading The Host for the second time, so hopefully I can come back and post some more interesting things in terms of discussion. I have this awful habit of reading certain book at break-neck speed to just find out what happens. The second time around I form more opionions, play closer attentioned to details, blah blah. :P

I'm wanting to re-read The Host..but I'm in the middle of Stone of Tears with Richard and Kahlan and feel guilty going to The Host...but I probably will quite soon.

I think Wanda did want to be with Jared all the time, but she felt so hurt because he kept on glaring at her...killing her inside. She really did love Jared in the beginning before she really knew Ian, instead of him being the guy who strangled her....you know. The reason she didn't go after him is more than likely because she hated when he looked at her, he hated her.

I think it's great that Jared was doing those things for Melanie. That just proves his love for her, yes it was completely heartless of him when it comes to Wanda. But he thought the love of his life was lost...and now he found her? Wouldn't you do that if it was your love? As you can tell through the conversation later on between Ian and Jared. He didn't even take into consideration what Wanda would feel like..which is selfish, but also just proving that he is in love with one girl...and wants her back. That's just what loves does to you sometimes.

AND in the end, I believe Jared showed that he DID care for Wanda more than we thought. I mean...remember when Melanie touched Ian's arm and Jared just stared at Wanda as if they had a secret connection? I think he did fall a little bit in love with Wanda. A LITTLE bit, enough to care about her more than a soul. And I think it really struck him when they were alone in the car and she stabbed Melanie's arm. Yup.

Ian all the way though.

I'm definitely not a Sci-Fi kinda person when it comes to books.. Not even really a fan of the movies but wow! That book was pretty friggin amazing.. Wayy better than i thought. I'm glad it ended the way it did.. Do you think there'll be a second one? I hope so. :] Thank god for Stephenie Meyer!!

That's completely true Neakky. And like Stephenie Meyer said, it's science fiction for those who don't like sci-fi. I didn't like sci-fi at all. I used to leave it up to my brother for that stuff. Because of Meyer and Westerfeld, I like sci-fi now, I can stand it.

And the Host is just brilliant. I mean, wouldn't you love to be Wanderer? Jared and Ian...yum yum!!

Does anyone else not like the nickname Wanda? I don't - I think it demoralises her. Wanderer is such a beautiful creature, and Wanda is so plain...

And Jamie reminded me of Jacob for some reason. I don't know why...

Well I got used to Wanda eventually, but it made me laugh a bit first..It's an old-fashioned name in Germany...Rarely used for young people..However it's shorter than Wanderer which makes it convenient!

As for Jamie and Jacob: I didn't get the same impression but now that you're saying it..Makes sense, especially when you think of the 'young' Jake in Twilight.I guess the both have the 'role' of the 'young boy' in the book..Does that make sense? =) I think it's not really their character traits but that role that makes them similar

Every time I read "Wanda" I thought of a little lady I went to church with. And then The Fairly-Odd Parents. I don't like the name, either. It's not very pretty.

Yeah, I kept comparing Jamie to Jacob. I think it's because I spent Jacob's roles in Twilight and New Moon thinking of him as a younger brother sort.

i was so glad they called her wanda and not wanderer. the name bothered me coz you couldn't tell if she was male or female. so when the ycame up with wanda, i was like yes, yes, *happiness*
guess i'm the only one though.

as for similarities:
kyle (in the end) = emmett
sunny = alice
jamie = a friend of mine's little brother, lol
oh Cedric....you're hotter when you're Edward Cullen!

Rob, you can stand under my umbrella - also when it's not even f*cking raining

Yeah, I wasn't too fond of the name "Wanda" either. Wanderer was a beautiful name for a beautiful creature.. It was different and unique. Kinda made me mad when they started calling her that, lol.

As for Jamie: I didn't automatically think of Jacob but now I'm getting the feeling of some similarities, lol.

And for Sunny, that's pretty much what I was thinking 'cos how Stephenie described her.

All I know is I'd die if she came out with a 2nd and I'm just about peeing myself for the arrival of Breaking Dawn. :D

i really didn't find Jaime to be much like Jacob at all...well at first I did and then i really thought that Ian reminded me more of Jacob than Jaime, mostly because he starts out as the underdog, since she was already quite enamored with Jared. I saw the Host as almost a way to give Jacob his victory in a non-descript way

The only reason Ian reminded me of Jacob is because he was an underdog become a main character...if not the favorite character of many, but there were sometimes...not all times..that he really reminded me of Edward. I wondered if Stephenie Meyer wasn't fully away from Edward..because there were some parts where Ian was like him .

But Ian is his own gorgeous creature...

i think SM has a thing for eyes b/c with both Ian and Edward it was what I really fell in love with first....i also like how she constantly compares two guys like fire and ice...Edward cold ice, Edward hot fire obviously...but with the Host she was much more sneaking....constatnly referring to Ian's eyes as icy while Jared's glares were burning through her...i might have made that up i can't remember i've been reading too much of a lot of different stuff lately

Yeah, SM has said it somewhere or another (or possibly both) that she believes eyes are the windows to the soul. Personally, it bugs the hell out of me.

Hm...I never noticed that about Ian and Jared. Maybe that's her style: over-usage of references to eyes and totally polar love interests

She did describe Jared's kisses and connection with Melanie's body as fire, whereas Ian was more of a building up, magma. Cooler than Jared...but still sweet and passionate.
