Please don't flame me for this, I'm just trying to understand. I want opinions!
I know that there are some die-hard Jacob fans out there, but I just don't really get it. I thought he was a sweet kid in New Moon, but started to lose affection when he became so bitter.
And Eclipse? Pfft. Bella annoyed me a bit in Eclipse. But Jacob? Oh. My. Goodness. I want to hit that boy, and was excited when Bella did. I just felt that he was really disrespectful of everyone, and pushy, and very manipulative.
So...what is it about Jacob that everyone loves?
I'm not saying i hate him, I'm just saying I don't really understand him. I want to feel more sympathetic towards the boy.
(Posted on TT as well, but I wanted some adult opinions too!)
As much as Jacob frustrates me (and believe me, he freaking does) I still really like him. I don't know I guess I kind of fell for him as absentmindedly as Bella did. He has the whole rebellious streak in him, he's not afraid to make his feelings known, much like Edward. He lacks Edward's charm though, but I still find him to be a very warm, caring person.
I don't think he's right for Bella, but I could easily see myself being good friends with Jacob. I just want him to be happy (preferably by imprinting on someone else, so he stops thinking about Bella, she has enough problems to come in BD). _________________ "You are exactly my brand of heroin"
He's a (non-vampire) teenage boy. That sums it all up. Angst, angst, angst. He has to deal with being a werewolf and loving a girl he can't have, not to mention that girl will (no ifs!) one day be his enemy. As for the manipulative part: he's just trying to get what he wants. Everyone is like that to some extent.
I love him to death, but, I agree, he's not for Bella. He needs to imprint. _________________

I kind of get the angst. Sometimes, I forget how Bella and Edward have a much more mature relationship that kind of contrasts with Jacob's point of view. And immaturity is kind of not the most attractive to me, so that could probably be why I have had had such a problem with poor Jake.
He deserves happiness and a girl he adores so he can let Bella do her thing, whatever that will be in BD.

I know that Jacob isn't right for Bella. She belongs with Edward, as far as I'm concerned.
Jacob's passion, his heartache, his rebellion.
He's so bold, unafraid of letting others know of what he's thinking, what he wants.
He embraces what he is. His loyalty and devotion to his pack, willing to do anything for their well-being.
Apparently, he'll try his darnest to get what he wants (which is, obviously, Bella).
Despite her choosing his mortal enemy (haha) over him, he still loves her.
He's so human, so alive. _________________
I'm not sure his appeal either - and I like him haha. I just feel really bad for the guy even though he can be a real jerk, because he loves someone who can and will never truly love him back (because of the way she loves Edward). I fell for him in New Moon and I know his behaviour in Eclipse was, well, not good, but he's still Jake to me and I just want him to be happy - just not with Bella. It's hard to explain I guess....
I wanted to say thanks for everyone trying to explain Jacob. I feel like I have a better grip on the boy now. I can see that he is quite the opposite of Edward, and how Bella would be attracted to that. Edward is quiet, controlled. Jake is well, not. I can also see how Bella in New Moon would have loved hanging out with him, because he is so unlike Edward. He probably didn't remind her of him, which made it easier to be around him.
I think he just really frusterated me in Eclipse, but I'm going to try to re-read it now and see it a little more from his perspective and the reasons behind what he does, instead of just getting blindingly angry over his actions.

i agree that he was a total manipulator and annoying, but hey, he's only 16. to me, he's still a boy, he's just in a man's body with super everything. he's just not as mature as Edward too. i can't believe Bella let him be that much older than her in their little age game. she can be such a pushover with him sometimes. i really pity him; i really disliked him a lot because of his immaturity, but the Eclipse epilogue showed that we had to have some pity for him since he got bad end of the deal.(ugh, Leah) usually when i pity people, i like them more. so i didn't like it when he was with Bella, but if he were with ME.....hmmm.........it'd be a different story. lol!
I didn't really become a big Jake fan until Eclipse. But now I totally love Jake! Of course, I want Bella and Edward to be together (even though I had some serious problems with their relationship in Eclipse), but I would definitely take Jake for myself if I had to choose between the two.
Here's the reason why - Jake has that bad boy quality about him, while still being a nice guy underneath. The moment I realized how much I loved Jake was when he pulled up to Forks High on his motorcycle and said "when you're ready to have some real fun, then let me know." It was just .... HOT. He's adventurous, he tests the limits, and he likes to have fun by experiencing life for all it's worth -- what's not to love? He's also a free spirit, opposed to Edward, who I believe is overly controlling of Bella in Eclipse. As someone above me said, he does anything to get what he wants, which is a very attractive quality.
Basically, in my opinion, Jake > Edward.
But I would be very disappointed if Bella did not end up with Edward as a vampire in the end. _________________
Honestly, the idea of not liking Jacob never occurred to me. I've always felt bad for him and have even played with the idea of liking Bella to end up with him. But of course, I like to have my cake and eat it too, so Bella stays with Edward and keeps Jacob as her best friend. In my mind, anyway. As for Edward vs Jacob, I've never really been able to equally compare the two. They're just so different and both so lovable. Yeah, he's immature, but he's not even two decades old, while Edward is over 100. But my main reason for loving Jake is probably because I have a great sympathy for him. I know EXACTLY what it's like to love someone who says they love you back but then chooses to marry someone else.

New Moon was when we all first decided to like (or in some cases love) Jacob, in fact most loved him by the end of that book, just for keeping Bella alive. In Eclipse that's where we loose people. Personally i think the draw there is i know how nice and kind and sweet and funny he is when hes not stressed; when hes not fighting for Bella on 3 hours of sleep. i know that what he does is what makes sense to him; that if he had a 100 years of teenage girls thoughts under his belt he probally would have been an equal enemy for Edward. Dont get me wrong im happy that Edward and Bella are going to end up together but i still hope that Jake gets his happy ending and that the epilouge of Eclipse was not the last we are going to hear from him.

I've been reading New Moon again - properly. Usually I skip to the Volturi scene, because it annoys me, Edward not being there.
But I realised that I do like Jacob, to a certain extent. I like pre - Eclipse Jacob, when he could just make Bella laugh and it wasn't this game of 'I'm Better for You'.
That's what annoys me about Jacob. His love for Bella doesn't seem to run as deep as what Edward's does. It seems to me he is more "you shouldn't be with Cullen cos you should be with me' because he doesn't want to lose a really really good friend. And yes, I know he 'loves' her.
But Jacob is arrogant. He wants Bella all to himself. He says its me or nothing, I'll go get myself killed in this fight if you choose him. At least Edward accepts that Jacob is there, and says to Bella that he is prepared for her to choose Jacob over him (as much as it pains him). And Jacob flaunts the fact that he is better for Bella than Edward. Edward knows this, and it pains him. And Jacob just makes it worse.
So I like pre Eclipse Jacob. Bring him back!! _________________

I totally agree. With everything you said.
Except that I really fell in love with him in New Moon. When he really gave Bella the space to come out, and not force her was really sweet. And he was always making sure that he didn't hurt Bella, especially after his transformation.
And in Eclipse, when he accepted Bella with open arms again, wow is he great. Although he irritated me a bit in Eclipse when he kept clinging on to Bella (i hated that part bcause i had a gut feeling that he'd get hurt in the end), he was still there, willing to be her friend. Jacob's a great guy, and truly deserves someone who can be his sunshine.
='( I wish he was real. haha. And he'd marry me. haha. _________________
I'm not sure if my opinion really counts since I read the books in wrong order. (The stupid library didn't have "New Moon")
So my last impression of Jacob was the sweet innocent New Moon Jacob.
I like him because he has flaws, he's kind of more human, I feel like I can relate to what he feels.
But I really like both Edward and Jacob. The only reason I don't think Bella should be with Jacob is because there is/was always this risk of him imprinting on someone els.
I believe Jacob truly loves Bella and that she loves him too, but in a different way than Edward.
I don't understand why people hate him so much. I mean; the person you love is with someone els and you know you can never be with them, but you secretly hope that they will fall in love with you and give it all up and be happy with you. But deep down you know you will be alone, and never find someone like them again. Poor guy. I would be selfish and rude too if that was my case.
And they had so much fun.
"Jacob, you are absolutely, without a doubt, the most talented and wonderful person I know. You get ten years for this one"
"Cool! I'm middle-aged now!"
