Since no one has posted yet, I think I'll start a thread.

We know about Carlisle mostly from the various stories he's told his family and Bella. But what about his earlier years? The learning by night to overcome his thirst for human blood. His centuries of repressing that desire to become something more than he was intended for.

What do you think happened when he stayed with the Volturi? What makes Aro and the rest dislike him so much other than his coven is a large one and, inheritantly, one that strives to maintain such a façade toward unsuspecting humans?

Very nice points you raised there.

I just gotta add, Aro doesn't seem mad at Carlisle. At least, not as much as Marcus and Caius are.

Carlisle is portrayed as open and friendly yet at the same time, he seems mysterious. There is something underneath that friendly behavior of his. I think it will be mentioned in BD though, because Bella will (supposedly) be turned and so she has the right to know all of this.

Yeah, that's true. With Aro being so... calm... giddy almost... I was a little freaked to say the least.

Very mysterious. There are so many things that Bella doesn't know. So many "little" things that go along with the "bloodsucker" lifestyle. Smile

And I am completely curious about Carlisle and Esme's relationship to each, too. What is that that makes it so deep? So connective? It's much different than say Bella and Edward's and a 180 degree difference between Rosalie and Emmett's.

What do you guys think about it?

Yeah, SM needs to let us in on a little bit more with regards to our vamps.

I KNOW. They hardly talk about it in the book... but I sortof FEEL Esme's and Carlisle's connection. It goes down so deep it's almost true and alive.

Why is it a 180 degree turn from Rosalie and Emmett's? I kind of think they have another side to them which we don't go to see. Afterall, they do separate from the Cullen's from time to time.

Carlisle fascinates me so much as a character.

In respect to his relationship with Aro, I feel that since Aro can see all of your history, he probably has more compassion as to why Carlisle feels the way he does. Marcus and Caius are probably more threatened by Carlisle because of his enormous self-restraint.

Esme and Carlisle were truly love at first sight, and because Esme felt love for Carlisle before she was changed, I'll bet that love was amplified because of the change. I feel that Carlisle and Esme's relationship is a lot like Bella and Edward's in that they knew from the get-go that their mate was the only person for them and that life without that other person wasn't worth it. Of course that's how it is with most of the vamps in the book, but their love for the other just seems to connect on a different plain than the others.

I remembered reading in a personal correspondence that Marcus of Volterra's mate was killed and her death was what lead him to be like a zombie. I'll bet that his relationship with his mate was like that of Carlisle/Esme and Edward/Bella. Maybe that has something to do with his resentment??

Because Carlisle's just sweet like that and Aro was the only one to appreciate his intense compassion. plus, Aro seems like he likes and enjoys the company of everyone.

Gotta love Twilight Lexicon. Check out what is said in personal correspondance#1, 4th question.

It's a bit too long to quote, methinks.

Never too long. For the lazy, like myself....

Quote:
To understand how Carlisle and Esme fell in love, you have to know Esme’s story.

So you’ve seen a little be of Esme’s life above–it wasn’t so great. Her marriage was all but arranged by her parents. She wasn’t in love with the man she married, though she was willing to give it a try. She wanted very much to fall in love with anyone, but she’d never met anyone that measured up to an encounter she had when she was sixteen. I’d better describe that a bit:

In 1911, Esme broke her leg falling out of a tree she’d climbed. Her family lived on a farm on the outskirts of Columbus. The local doctor was away, and it was after dark by the time they got her to the small hospital in Columbus. She was treated by a Dr. Cullen. It was his last month in town (he was already claiming to be 35). She never got over the experience.

Esme was the last of her friends to marry (they got married earlier back then). She was thinking of moving West to be a schoolteacher, but her father didn’t think it was respectable for a lady to live alone in the wilds. The son of a family friend, a man with good prospects, wanted to marry her, and her father pressured her to accept. She was indifferent towards Charles Evenson, but not opposed to him. She married him, and quickly found that this had been a bad decision. Charles’s public face was very different from his private face; he abused her. Her parents counseled her to be a good wife and keep quiet. When he was drafted, it was a huge relief to her. When he came back, it was terrifying.

The pregnancy was Esme’s catalyst to escape. She knew she wasn’t letting a child be brought into that home. She ran to a second cousin that lived in Milwaukee, and then moved further north when word of her whereabouts leaked to her parents. She blended in easily, pretending to be one of the many war widows. She taught school in a small community outside Ashland. When her baby died (lung infection) just a few days after he was born, she had nothing left. She had no idea that Carlisle was working in the little hospital in Ashland when she jumped off the cliff outside the town. Carlisle remembered her, of course, remembered her as the happy girl she had been at sixteen. He didn’t want her to die.

So you can imagine what she thought when she opened her eyes, in all that pain, and saw the face that she’d never forgotten in a decade.

Hopefully that gives you some insight into how quickly and easily Esme and Carlisle’s relationship formed. She was not really that upset to find out she was a vampire–she didn’t take it as in stride as Emmett, but she was just happy to be with the man/vampire of her dreams. She did always have that maternal ache, and, as the physically oldest of the Cullens, she fell into a mothering role.

This probably sounds like I am an awful Twilight fan, but how old was Carlisle when he was changed?

23. It's in either Personal Correspondance #1 or 2. 2 I think.

That story....is fascinating. I am so glad you put it up, or whoever did...I don't know who did I just saw it and quoted it. I think I was dead tired that I didn't read this when Stephenie talked about it the first time. It makes me understand Esme so much more....just for a little bit more details.
