This the place to discuss what you think the meaning is behind the cover of Breaking Dawn.

I don't really care much for it, to be honest. There's no real reason as to why I don't like it; it's just ...I don't know *shrug*
This is how I interpret it: The queen is vampire Bella, the pawn is some blood-filled human that she can easily knock off the chess board of life.

I completely agree^^ It isn't as romantic as the other three or as wistful.

I've heard this many times by others...and I really never thought of it until then. Either I saw it here first or the lexicon *shrugs*

Anyway...the Queen is Bella as a vampire and the pawn is her as a human. Easy to defeat, trying to stay alive...but too much blood inside of her for a queen to easily defeat.

Red pawn = blood-filled human
White,porcelain Queen = Stone-Cold vampire Bella.

I've never thought of it that way, but it does seem logical.

My theory was that Bella is the Queen - white, porcelain, vampire and magnificantly dangerous. Nothing can stand in her way as a vampire....

EXCEPT

the humans she leaves behind. And also Jacob. Werewolves=hot bloodied mammals.
The people she will be leaving behind have some play in her decision making.

YES i agree Bella has already made her decision and Edward's finally agreed and everything, but Bella still has a concience (that's spelt wrong I know) and she doesn't want to hurt those she loves that will get hurt because of the change.

That's my theory anyways

I like the cover even though it's not like the other ones. And I really like Molly's and ManiacsRose's interpretation of the cover, i guess I don't really have a thought on what it could mean. I keep thinking about how SM had no say in both the NM and Eclipse covers so I just don't know if it means anything at all.

Well my sister and I had a talk about they quote. And in the past we always knew who was quoted. But this was the one time where I was concered about who she was talking to! I am sure that the quote is meant for Edward but after reading the chapter, it just made me think.

But all of that aside I have to like the interpretations that I have read so far.

I didn't know that she didn't have a say! I kinda understood what Eclipse's cover meant, with the breaking ribbons, but New Moon went *swoosh* right over the head.

I like the cover for Breaking Dawn, no matter what it means. It gets us all thinking, that's for sure!!

I think the cover only fits with the others because of the color theme continuation. The other covers are a lot less defined...the images on this one is so clear it stands out a lot more.
I don't care for it right now, but I bet when the novel comes out we will all be smacking our palms to our foreheads going, DUH!

OK. I had a dream about 3 days before the official cover came out that I was in a bookstore and was buying Breaking Dawn, and guess what the cover was in my dream? A chessboard. Weird, huh?

Ok, I read something about SM saying she had no idea how the tulip related to the story in regards to the cover for New Moon. It could be the same thing here. I think it'll make more sense once the book itself comes out in August. As for my own personal opinion, I think it's kinda cool, though I have no clue what it could mean haha.

The thing that bothers me the most about this darn cover is the 'k' in Breaking.. It's sooo pointy!!

I know it is a trivial thing, and I'm about 99.9% sure it's completely irrelevant to the story.. It's just so pointy.

Can't get over it, haha.. maybe I should have posted this in the "rants" section Very Happy

lol i agree with you, but that said, i'm sure there's a reason for that K pointy thing... a typographer (person who deals with fonts) must have a reason for it. it seems like such a focal point. Why is it pointing to the white chess piece? (bella?) Is she going to break? - (ahh i hope not) maybe its just my wide speculation.

but i do agree with the other speculations, i'm betting on that smaller red pawn, is her (bella as a human) leaving behind her past (red pawn again)
another speculation again (dunno if its been discussed elsewhere), u know when the pawn reaches the other side of the board it turns into a queen? (another symbol for her turning into a vampire)

That is really strange!
I believe that I read somewhere that SM was very involved with picking out the cover to Breaking Dawn, because she didn't want what happened to the flower on New Moon again.

I like everyone's interpertations here, they make sense to me.

I also wanted to point out that after taking typography class last semester, I greatly appreciate the "k".

I did not know that! That gives a whole new perspective to the cover for me.

Some people have been speculating that the pawn is Jacob, and there is going to be a beat down between Bella and Jake once she is turned, etc, etc. All sorts of crazy things out there, but I think everyone here has come up with the most logical theories.

Interesting about Bella breaking.. although if you look at the k and beyond it just says 'king'.. and now I know I'm looking way to much into this haha

Also, I always thought that the pawn was Jacob.. because it was red, and Jacob is described as russet, he's reddish rust colored when he's a wolf.. and plus he is in her way, to get to the end of the board.. Dunno.. that was my thought, but it makes sense that'd it'd be human bella too, with blood.. and then the queen is her as a vamp.. without blood
